Prometheus [spoilers], David/Shaw Rant

shingo-the-pest:

Gah, I have to get out my little David/Shaw rant, because I just reposted a fanart  of David tells Shaw she’s pregnant. That moment just, GAH, broke the development between them. Except it didn’t. But it did.

David is intrigued by her. From the start we see him spend extra time with her, having an extra interest in her dreams, dwelling over her while everyone is fumbling around after cryosleep, hopping out of the ship in a horrible storm to grab her and her boyfriend, his antagonism towards her boyfriend. During the first half of the movie, I was shipping them. Not shipping them hard, but there was something there. I’m willing to call it puppy love. It’s even cuter because she doesn’t really know he exists.

And then she gets evil alien baby pregnant. (And it’s David’s fault.) And David finds this fascinating. Of course he does, his favorite person has something new and unique inside them, this is great! But that moment broke the ship for me because of his total disregard for her life. He wants to put her under cryosleep again and says that she’ll be taken back for a “proper” abortion procedure.

Bullshit. If she went into cryo, the company would study her and the fetus, and she would never wake up again. David knows this. He finds her fascinating, she’s his favorite person, but he isn’t bothered by her dying.

So yeah. Urgh. Kinda broke the ship for me.

But on the uphand, if she’s asleep, he gets to watch her dreams again, she’s got this fascinating creature in her (and he even got to play a part in it being there!), he basically gets her all to himself for the next 2 years back to earth, her annoying boyfriend is out of the way, and she now definitely knows he exists. The situation is great for David!

I will say that by the end of the movie, I was kinda shipping them again. He warned her, and expressed some caring about whether she fucking lived again. That sorta makes up for everything. Sorta.

I was enthralled by this aspect. I’m assuming, as an android, that David is superawesome at compartmentalizing things; so while I found his fascination intriguing, I wasn’t extremely surprised that David seemed to experience no conflict regarding her situation. I mean, he has a fascination for her, but he can’t really empathize with her.
